About the program
Cognitive Science is the study of the mind/brain. The Cognitive Science (Cog Sci) Program at Cornell is an interdisciplinary program, with connections to Psychology, Computer Science, Linguistics, Human Development, Philosophy, Neurobiology, Information Science, Mathematics, and other areas. With such a broad foundation, the program allows and encourages students and faculty to pursue research that spans many departments. The Cog Sci program is involved in expanding research programs in computational vision and computational linguistics as well.
One of the advantages of an interdepartmental program is the breadth of resources it affords its students and faculty. The Cog Sci program is proud to co-sponsor a lecture series with several departments, including Psychology, Linguistics, and Computer Science. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend in order to facilitate interesting and intellectual discussions, and to gain exposure to a variety of related fields.
Cognitive Science is offered as an undergraduate concentration and a graduate minor. Undergraduates may take courses to fulfill one of five course tracks:
- Perception and Cognition
- Language and Cognition
- Cognition and Information Processing
- Cognitive Neuroscience
- Independent Study (designed by student and advisor)
Graduate students should gain solid experience with Cognitive Science methodologies within their major field, along with an appreciation and understanding of those in related departments.
